SB344 Summary

• Requires governmental entities that raze memorial buildings to either maintain the original name on any replacement building or erect a marker memorializing the person or event for which the building was originally named.

• Deems a waiver petition automatically denied if the Committee on Alabama Monument Protection fails to act on an application within 90 days.

• Reduces the penalty for violations from $25,000 per day to $5,000 per day until full restorative action is taken to comply with memorial preservation requirements.

• Authorizes the Attorney General to commence civil actions to enjoin threatened or continuing violations and to stay fines upon written request and submission of supporting documentation that restoration has begun.

• Becomes effective October 1, 2025.
