Driver licenses issued exclusively to individuals who did not provide proof of lawful presence in the United States are invalid and do not authorize operation of a motor vehicle in Alabama.

Law enforcement officers must issue a citation for driving without a license to individuals driving with invalid licenses, unless they possess alternative documentation proving lawful presence in the United States.

The Alabama State Law Enforcement Agency shall maintain a website statement summarizing these provisions and design signage to be installed at all state welcome signs notifying drivers of the invalid license policy.

Amended Section 32-6-2 to clarify that the driver license exemption for nonresidents with valid licenses from their home state or country does not apply if the license is invalid under this act.

Effective date: October 1, 2025.
