Alabama Department of Environmental Management must adopt rules by January 1, 2027 for the beneficial reuse of foundry sand

Foundry sand may be used as raw material in asphalt, cement, and concrete manufacturing; subbase for hard-surface road construction; fill material; sandbag filler for emergency flood control; and leachate control drainage or alternative cover material at sanitary landfills

Foundry sand is defined as solid by-product from foundry industry molding, core-making, and casting cleaning processes containing primarily sand, olivine, or clay

Amends Section 22-27-12 of the Code of Alabama 1975 under the Solid Wastes and Recyclable Materials Management Act

Effective date: June 1, 2026
