Spouses of active duty service members receive 5 additional points on state employment examination ratings; spouses of veterans with service-connected disabilities and surviving spouses of service members who died in the line of duty receive 10 additional points

Counties, municipalities, and other political subdivisions are authorized to grant hiring and promotion preferences to veterans, spouses of veterans, spouses of active duty service members, and surviving spouses of deceased veterans

Private employers may adopt voluntary written veterans' preference employment policies for hiring and promotion decisions, applicable to veterans, veteran spouses, and spouses of active duty service members

Private employers implementing veterans' preference policies must notify the Alabama Department of Workforce, which will maintain a public registry on its website of participating employers

Effective date is January 1, 2027; passed the House 103-0 on March 3, 2026
