Elevates assault against current or former public officials from third degree (misdemeanor) to second degree assault (Class C felony) when committed with intent to cause physical injury during or as a result of their official duties

Increases penalties for harassment and harassing communications against public officials from Class C misdemeanor to Class B misdemeanor

"Public official" is defined by reference to Section 36-25-1 of the Alabama Code, which covers elected and appointed government officials

Effective date: October 1, 2026

Also makes technical, non-substantive updates to existing assault and harassment statute language (replacing "person" with "individual" throughout)
