Certificated teachers with at least 5 years of full-time experience at accredited private schools receive salary credit when hired by Alabama public K-12 schools, earning half a year on the State Minimum Salary Schedule for each year of private school service

Minimum salary adjustment is 2.5 years (for 5 years private experience); maximum adjustment is 10 years (for 20+ years private experience)

Teachers who transferred from accredited private schools to public schools between June 1, 2022 and the 2026-2027 school year may retroactively claim the salary adjustment by submitting documentation to their local superintendent during the 2026-2027 school year

Private school employment years do not count toward retirement benefits

Takes effect immediately upon passage, with provisions commencing in the 2026-2027 school year
