SAE is the only national fraternity established in the antebellum South, founded by eight men including Noble Leslie DeVotie who wrote the ritual and chose the name

The Alabama Mu Chapter remains the founding chapter, with a historic chapter house on University Boulevard containing original artifacts and founder paintings

The fraternity eliminated traditional pledging in 2014 to curb hazing and is guided by its creed "The True Gentleman"

Notable alumni include President William McKinley, Eliot Ness, Troy Aikman, Pete Maravich, William Faulkner, Sam Elliott, and Dierks Bentley
