Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham recognized for being named the 2026 Ferris E. Lucas Sheriff of the Year by the National Sheriffs' Association

Sheriff Cunningham became Montgomery County's first African American sheriff in 2015 and oversees an agency of more than 400 employees with a $50.1 million budget covering 643 square miles

Served 24 years in the Alabama National Guard beginning in 1984, graduated from the police academy in 1989, and served as Chief Deputy for 15 years before becoming sheriff

Served as President of the Alabama Sheriff's Association from January 2020 to 2022 and is a 2007 graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy Class 231
