Hayes was born November 10, 1949, in Shiloh, Alabama, and began his career teaching in the Memphis City School System before becoming a certified electrician and welder

Received several NASA awards including Group Achievement Honor Award for the Huntsville Operations Support Center Tier III Upgrade Team and ISS Payload Control Area Redesign Team

Concluded his career with 45 years of service recognized by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and volunteered with the American Red Cross installing smoke detectors in North Madison County homes

Survived by three children, four grandchildren, and four siblings; preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Rita Coates Hayes, and son Danny Charley
