Hackett was a 1965 Alabama A&M University graduate in Building Construction Engineering and served as District 7 member of the AAMU Board of Trustees

Served as President of the AAMU National Alumni Association from 2012 to 2014

Career spanned approximately 7 years teaching woodworking in Birmingham and Vestavia school systems, followed by over 35 years with the City of Birmingham, Housing Authority of the Birmingham District, and Alabama Power Company

Member of Alpha Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; survived by his wife of nearly 45 years, four children, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren
