Lt. Herrera began training at the Birmingham Police Academy on November 29, 2004, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Alabama at Birmingham

Career included assignments as South Precinct Officer, South Precinct Task Force Officer (2007-2009), Vice/Narcotics Unit Detective (2009-2015), and various supervisory roles

Made BPD history in October 2015 when she and her husband Charles Newfield became the first married couple promoted to sergeant at the same time

Promoted to Lieutenant in July 2019, serving as North Precinct Day Shift Commander, Special Victims Unit Commander (January 2021), and East Precinct Lieutenant (since March 2024)
