Lieutenant Herrera began training at the Birmingham Police Academy on November 29, 2004, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Alabama at Birmingham

Served in various roles including South Precinct Officer, South Precinct Task Force Officer, Vice/Narcotics Unit Detective, Internal Affairs Division sergeant, and Special Victims Unit Commander

Made Birmingham Police Department history in October 2015 when she and her husband, Charles Newfield, became the first married couple to be promoted to sergeant at the same time

Promoted to Lieutenant in July 2019 and most recently served as East Precinct Lieutenant since March 9, 2024
