Members of state boards and commissions subject to the Alabama Sunset Law must complete a mandatory board governance course of at least 5 hours, provided by the Department of Examiners of Public Accounts

Current board members serving on October 1, 2026 must complete the course by March 1, 2027; new members must complete it within 150 days of beginning each term

Required course topics include the Alabama Open Meetings Act, Contract Review Permanent Legislative Oversight Committee role, travel/compensation/per diem rules, recurring audit issues, and general operating best practices

Board members must sign an affirmation pledging to act in the public interest, avoid personal or political conflicts, consider all members' views, not corrupt entity operations, and attend all meetings unless good cause exists

Exemptions apply to cabinet members, statewide elected officials, and county or municipal governing body members; the act becomes effective October 1, 2026
