AL SB27

Expands the Board of Trustees of the Department of Archives and History from its current structure (two members per congressional district plus two at-large) to 17 members: one from each of Alabama's seven congressional districts, nine at-large members, and the Governor or designee

Shifts appointment authority from the board itself to elected officials: the Governor appoints district representatives and one at-large seat; the Speaker of the House appoints four at-large seats; the President Pro Tempore of the Senate appoints four at-large seats

Requires two seats to be filled from nominees provided by minority party leaders (one House, one Senate), and mandates that appointing authorities coordinate to ensure board diversity in race, gender, geography, urban/rural representation, and economic background

All appointed members serve six-year terms and serve at the pleasure of their appointing authority; the Senate must confirm all appointments

Retroactive to January 1, 2025, with staggered initial terms beginning between 2025-2030 to establish rotating appointments
