Sorrells was born May 15, 1937 in Covington County, Alabama, graduated with honors from Opp High School in 1955, and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown as Radarman First Class

Founded J.H. Sorrells Trucking (later MSJ Trucking) in July 1959, which became one of Alabama's most respected privately held trucking companies

Served as chairman of the Alabama Trucking Association Board of Directors (2004-2005), received the Chester Webb Award for lifetime achievement, served 15 years on the Opp Chamber of Commerce Board, and served on the Alabama Ethics Commission

Survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeanette, three daughters, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; was inducted into the Opp Hall of Fame in 2014
