Williams passed away February 4, 2026, at age 68 from leukemia; he served as Troy Athletic Director from 1994 to 2004, during which Troy won 28 conference championships

Led Troy's transition from NCAA Division II to Division I and was part of the 1987 coaching staff named American Football Coaches Association Coaching Staff of the Year after Troy's Division II National Championship

Founded the Camellia Bowl in 2014, an annual college football postseason game in Montgomery (now the IS4S Salute to Veterans Bowl), and served as executive director of the Central Alabama Sports Commission

Received the General Robert Neyland Athletics Director Award in 2002 and was inducted into the Troy Sports Hall of Fame in 2016
