Records, files, and information kept by the State Crime Laboratory remain privileged and confidential and may only be released by court order or direction of the prosecuting attorney or public defender.

Defendants and their attorneys retain full access to all records and evidence pertaining to their case held by the laboratory.

The Department of Health may access autopsy records and files to implement quality improvement provisions under the Trauma System Act, § 20-13-801 et seq.

The State Medical Examiner must promptly file a full report of facts developed during examinations with law enforcement agencies, county coroner, and the prosecuting attorney of the jurisdiction where the death occurred.
