Public Law 108-137 authorized a 12-foot navigation channel on the Arkansas River, with the Record of Decision signed September 27, 2005, and initial $7,000,000 in funding appropriated in 2005.

A 12-foot channel would increase cargo capacity per barge by 43% and enable moving an additional 7,965 acres of soybeans on a 15-barge tow with minimal extra fuel costs.

The Arkansas River currently operates at only 11.5 million tons annually despite an estimated capacity of 35-45 million tons per year, with the restrictive 9-foot channel preventing growth.

Corps of Engineers surveys indicate the Arkansas portion of the river already has 12 or more feet of natural depth and maintenance at 12 feet would make Arkansas competitive in attracting new industries and jobs.

The House of Representatives encourages Congress and the Arkansas Congressional Delegation to support maintenance, funding, and completion of the 12-foot channel and requests the Chief Clerk transmit the resolution to federal leaders.
