School districts and public charter schools must adopt and implement policies for possession and administration of epinephrine in each school by January 1, 2014.

Epinephrine may be administered by a school nurse or by a school employee who holds a certificate under the law, has received training in epinephrine administration, and is designated as a care provider.

A licensed physician must issue a certificate authorizing school nurses or trained school employees to possess and administer epinephrine, with the certificate specifying the circumstances for administration.

The law applies to students believed to be experiencing a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction.

School nurses, public school teachers, and other school employees are added to the list of individuals who can be authorized to administer epinephrine under the Insect Sting and Other Allergic Reactions Emergency Treatment Act.
