Effective July 1, 2011, teachers who earn more than $5,000 during the first six months after retirement while providing substitute teaching services are not considered terminated from employment for retirement eligibility purposes.

Teachers with fewer than 38 years of credited service may be reemployed by a system-covered employer within 6 calendar months of their retirement effective date and still maintain retirement eligibility.

Teachers with 38 or more years of credited service may be reemployed within 1 calendar month of their retirement effective date without losing retirement eligibility.

Teachers who fail to meet termination and separation period requirements must repay retirement benefits paid during non-compliance and forfeit all future benefits until filing a new retirement application.

During the termination separation period, retired members may provide substitute teaching services (up to $5,000 in earnings) but cannot form regular employment relationships or exercise authority over system-covered employers.
