HB1273 Summary

• Prohibits public school districts from discriminating against students or parents based on religious viewpoint or expression, or from prohibiting students from expressing religious viewpoints in coursework, artwork, or written/oral assignments.

• Requires public school districts to allow students to voluntarily express religious viewpoints and evaluate such work using ordinary academic standards, relevance to the assignment, and whether it meets assignment requirements.

• Permits students to organize and participate in prayer groups and religious clubs, and to wear religious clothing, accessories, or jewelry that complies with school uniform policies.

• Allows schools to restrict student religious expression only if they document that the expression causes material and substantial disruption to class or school activities, or infringes on other students' rights.
