County sheriffs, deputy sheriffs, or trained security contractors shall transport all inmates committed to the Department of Correction to their assigned institutions or the Department of Community Correction and are entitled to fees provided by law.

County sheriffs must notify the director of the number of inmates in their charge committed to the Department of Correction, and upon request shall transport convicted persons free of charge to the assigned facility as determined by the Department of Correction or Department of Community Correction.

County sheriffs may immediately transport inmates to the Department of Correction or Department of Community Correction if determined to be in the best interest of the inmate and public due to overcrowding or other issues, and must notify the appropriate department of the need for immediate transport.

The Department of Correction or Department of Community Correction shall consider the sheriff's request for immediate transport when scheduling inmates for intake.
