Correctional Corporal Barbara Ester died on January 20, 2012, from mortal stab wounds to the chest sustained while attempting to confiscate contraband from an inmate at the East Arkansas Regional Unit in Brickeys, Arkansas.

Despite her injuries, Cpl. Ester maintained control of the situation and alerted other officers, demonstrating outstanding character reflective of correctional officers.

Cpl. Ester was a twelve-year veteran of the Arkansas Department of Correction and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and respected member of the Marianna, Arkansas community.

The Arkansas Department of Correction honored Cpl. Ester's memory by naming the department's first reentry facility in her honor.

The Senate expresses sincere condolences to Cpl. Ester's family and commends her heroic actions and outstanding contributions to the State of Arkansas, with a copy of the resolution to be transmitted to her daughter, Ms. Fannie Dukes Nichols.
