Charlie and Dow McVean envisioned a bike and pedestrian crossing over the Mississippi River connecting Tennessee and Arkansas to expand tourism and economic development in West Memphis and the Delta region.

The Big River Crossing opened in October 2016 after 6 years of development and millions of dollars raised and contributed by the McVeans, and is the only bike and pedestrian bridge adjacent to an active rail line in the United States.

Additional projects by the McVeans include a 73-mile levee top trail system and a Delta Regional River Park with 7 miles of trails, interpretative sites, environmental education resources, and reforestation efforts.

The McVeans' media firm is promoting visitation within Eastern Arkansas, and they continue working with state land management and transportation agencies on future improvements along the Mississippi River, St. Francis National Forest, and connections to the Delta Heritage Trail.

The Arkansas Senate recognizes and honors Charlie and Dow McVean for their contributions to the growth and prosperity of the Delta region, West Memphis, and the State of Arkansas.
