Election officials must receive a minimum of the prevailing federal minimum wage for holding an election, unless they opt to work as volunteers under subsection (c).

Election officials carrying materials to and from polling sites are eligible for mileage reimbursement at the state employee rate, except those working as volunteers.

Election officials may voluntarily work without pay or mileage reimbursement by signing an affidavit with the State Board of Election Commissioners specifying they decline compensation, mileage reimbursement, or both.

Officials who sign the volunteer affidavit cannot receive money or anything of value for their election work.

School-required paperwork documenting a student election official's assistance is not considered compensation or reimbursement under this law.
