SB570 Summary

• Creates one additional circuit judgeship in each of the Second, Fourth, Twelfth, and Nineteenth Judicial Districts-West with jurisdiction in law, equity, probate, and juvenile matters.

• Creates one additional circuit judgeship in the Sixth Judicial District with the requirement that the judge must be a resident of Perry County.

• Creates one additional circuit judgeship in the Twenty-first Judicial District, increasing the total number of circuit-chancery judges from two to three.

• Governor shall appoint qualified residents to temporarily fill the newly created positions until January 1, 2021, with permanent judges to be elected at the 2020 preferential primary election for six-year terms.

• Counties must provide courtroom, office facilities, and supplies for the new judgeships; the Sixth Judicial District counties must additionally provide a court reporter and trial court administrative assistant.

• Declares an emergency and makes the act effective July 1, 2019.
