HB 1016 Summary

• Creates "Alex's Law" to improve residential swimming pool safety and reduce accidental drowning deaths of children under five years old through awareness and barrier requirements

• Defines residential swimming pools to include hot tubs, wading pools, spas, and special purpose pools, and establishes barrier standards of at least 4 feet in height with no horizontal openings greater than 4 inches

• Requires the Department of Health to develop and post informational and educational materials about pool barriers and safety measures on its website

• Mandates that any person installing, constructing, repairing, or remodeling a residential swimming pool must provide the pool owner with educational materials from the Department of Health

• Directs the Department of Health to convene a work group including representatives from the Department of Health, State Fire Marshal's office, Pool and Hot Tub Alliance, contractors, and building officials to study feasibility of adopting the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code at state, county, and municipal levels
