HB 1583 Summary

• Creates a statewide Blue Alert System designed to aid in apprehension of persons suspected of killing or causing serious bodily injury to law enforcement officers

• System shall be developed and implemented by the Department of Public Safety in conjunction with existing state alert protocols

• Secretary of Department of Public Safety shall adopt protocols including reporting criteria, alert duration, and activation requirements

• Activation criteria require confirmation that a law enforcement officer has sustained serious physical injury, been killed, or gone missing under circumstances warranting safety concern

• Activation also requires notification of suspect apprehension status and sufficient descriptive information about suspect or circumstances to indicate the alert may help locate the suspect or missing officer
