Fayetteville School District No. 1 was the first public school district chartered in Arkansas in 1871, with the first Board of Education meeting held on March 20, 1871.

Leverett Elementary School became the first school in Arkansas to join the National Congress of Mothers (later National PTA) in 1921.

The district voluntarily began integrating schools on May 21, 1954, just four days after the Brown v. Board of Education decision was issued by the United States Supreme Court.

The Fayetteville Public Schools Gifted and Talented education program, established in 1983, became the standard for gifted programs statewide and has been recognized as Arkansas's top program seven times.

The 93rd General Assembly congratulates Fayetteville Public Schools for achieving 150 years of excellent public education.
