School year must begin each year on or after the Monday of the week containing August 19, but not earlier than August 14 and not later than August 26.

Each school district's board of directors determines the specific start date within the statutory window.

Labor Day shall be observed as a school holiday statewide with no school held on that date.

Division of Elementary and Secondary Education may grant waivers for earlier or later start dates only for exceptional or emergency circumstances such as contagious disease outbreaks, inclement weather, or acts of God.

Act declared an emergency and takes effect upon governor approval, expiration of veto period, or veto override.
