Senate Bill 537 Summary

• Political subdivisions may appoint up to 2 part-time law enforcement officers for each full-time certified law enforcement officer employed by the agency.

• Political subdivisions with a population of 1,000 or less may appoint up to 2 part-time law enforcement officers for each part-time chief of police employed by the agency.

• Political subdivisions may request additional part-time officers beyond authorized limits from the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training if special or unusual problems or circumstances justify the need.

• Requests for additional officers must state the justification, number of officers needed, and other information required by the commission.

• The commission may grant requests if it determines that allowing the additional part-time officers serves the public interest.
