Elementary teachers (K-6) and special education teachers (K-12) teaching literacy must demonstrate proficiency in scientific reading instruction by the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year.

Teachers who have not demonstrated proficiency by the 2023-2024 school year may be placed in intensive support status under § 6-17-2807 with a timeline specified in their professional growth plan.

All other teachers must demonstrate awareness (rather than proficiency) in knowledge and practices of scientific reading instruction.

New teachers hired in 2023-2024 and beyond must demonstrate proficiency or awareness (as applicable) either as a condition of licensure or within one year if already licensed or employed under a waiver.

Teachers who have already demonstrated proficiency through an approved pathway and are adding an endorsement to their license are exempt from these requirements.
