Bishop Michael Leon Mitchell was born August 4, 1960, in Perry, Florida, and answered the call to ministry while in high school, preaching his trial sermon at age 17 on August 28, 1977

Bishop Mitchell was ordained an Itinerant Deacon in 1979 and an Itinerant Elder in 1981, serving as pastor of multiple African Methodist Episcopal churches in Florida before becoming pastor of Saint Stephen AME Church in Jacksonville in September 1992, where he served for 24 years

Bishop Mitchell was elected and consecrated in 2016 as the 134th Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church at the 50th Quadrennial Session of the General Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

In 2016, Bishop Mitchell and his wife Supervisor Cordelia Mitchell were assigned as Episcopal Leaders of the 12th Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, which encompasses Arkansas and Oklahoma

The Arkansas Senate honors Bishop Michael Mitchell and Supervisor Cordelia Mitchell for their service to the 12th Episcopal District, recognizing their work in completing church projects, youth mentoring, health and education promotion, and involvement in community organizations and charitable work
