Vacancies on school district boards must be filled by majority vote of remaining directors within 30 days (for most vacancies) or 60 days (for certain specified vacancies), or by the county quorum court if the board fails to act or lacks a quorum

School districts must publish vacancy notices at least 30 days before appointment in local newspapers, on the district website, and through existing parent communication systems (text, phone, email)

Candidates seeking appointment must submit a petition signed by at least 20 qualified electors from the affected district or zone at least 10 days before the appointment meeting

Each qualified candidate must receive at least 5 minutes to present their candidacy at a public meeting before the vote, and all vacancy-related discussions must occur in open public meetings rather than executive sessions

If no valid petitions are received after following the required process, the board or quorum court may use an alternative method to fill the vacancy
