Expands the definition of "athletic injury" to include injuries of the type that occur during sports participation, regardless of the circumstances under which the injury was sustained, rather than limiting coverage only to competitive team or individual sports.

Adds "athletic illness" as a defined term and includes prevention, evaluation, and monitoring of athletic illnesses within the scope of athletic training practice.

Authorizes athletic trainers to use topical pharmacological agents in conjunction with therapeutic modalities pursuant to a prescription and appropriate education and training.

Establishes that physicians providing unpaid direction to athletic trainers regarding standard protocols and day-to-day activities are immune from civil liability unless guilty of gross negligence or intentional misconduct.

Clarifies that athletic trainers cannot treat athletic illnesses outside the context of participation in or preparation for games, sports, or recreational and physical fitness activities.
