HB 2593 Summary

• Establishes a joint legislative study committee on water salinity issues with 21 voting members including legislators, industry representatives, government officials, and two nonvoting federal agency representatives.

• Committee members include appointees representing agriculture, golf, hospitality, homebuilding, water utilities, wastewater departments, water law expertise, electric generation, ion exchange water softeners, and nonprofit associations focused on water and salt issues.

• Committee shall examine water salinity issues related to water softener usage, effects on water conservation and groundwater quality, financial impacts of treatment, and sources of excess salinity caused by high water softener usage.

• Committee must elect a chairperson and vice-chairperson and submit findings and recommendations to the governor, president of the senate, and speaker of the house no later than December 31, 2011.

• Committee and this statute are repealed September 30, 2012.
