SB 1457 - Schools; Sex Education

• Removes the restriction that sex education requirements apply only to school districts "with existing sex education curricula," making comprehensive sex education mandatory for all school districts.

• Requires sex education instruction to be medically accurate and comprehensive, covering human development, relationships, decision-making, abstinence, contraception, and disease prevention from kindergarten through grade 12.

• Mandates instruction on laws relating to sexual conduct with a minor for students in grades 7-12.

• Eliminates provisions prohibiting instruction that "promotes a homosexual life-style" or portrays homosexuality as a positive alternative.

• Requires school districts to notify parents of their right to request that their child be excused from sex education and sexually transmitted infection instruction.
