HB 2234 Summary

• Amends Arizona Revised Statutes section 38-651 to modify health insurance coverage for surviving spouses of state employees who die while the spouse's health insurance is in force.

• Allows surviving spouses to continue health coverage for up to 36 months by paying only the out-of-pocket premium amount that an active employee would pay for the same classification, rather than the previous rate of 102 percent of group rates.

• Removes the restriction that prohibited public monies from being expended to pay any portion of the premium for health insurance continued by a surviving spouse (except as otherwise provided by law).

• Applies to the Department of Administration's authority to procure health and accident coverage for state officers, employees, and their dependents.
