Effective January 1, 2013, Arizona residents are prohibited from owning, possessing, keeping, harboring, importing, or transporting restricted wildlife without a permit issued by the Arizona Department of Game and Fish.

The department may issue restricted wildlife permits only to Arizona residents for educational display, advancement of scientific knowledge or research, or to care for animals unable to return to their natural habitat, and to nonresidents who move into the state already legally possessing such wildlife.

The department is authorized to prescribe terms and conditions for restricted wildlife permits and must adopt a list of restricted wildlife species subject to these regulations.

Game rangers, wildlife managers, and peace officers may seize restricted wildlife held in violation of this section, and the original possessor is liable for reasonable costs of care and provision during seizure.
