SB1186 Summary

• Amends the definition of "peace officers" in Arizona law to include special agents from the office of the attorney general or county attorney who have received certification from the Arizona peace officer standards and training board.

• Expands disease testing provisions in A.R.S. § 13-1210 to allow testing of persons arrested or charged who are alleged to have interfered with law enforcement duties through contact with bodily fluids, in addition to existing provisions for criminal complaints and deceased persons.

• Prohibits licensure or registration of peace officers under professional licensing statutes, except for retired peace officers and those serving as accident reconstructionists or fire origin and cause investigators.

• Creates new fitness for duty examination procedures for law enforcement officers in A.R.S. § 38-1109, including requirements for notice, specific factual basis, officer representation rights, independent medical examination options, and a 20-day review period before final action.

• Repeals A.R.S. § 41-192.03 and makes technical corrections to law enforcement officer definitions and terminology throughout the statute.
