HB 2298 Summary

• Establishes that standard Arizona license plates issued beginning January 1, 2015 are valid for eight years and then expire (does not apply to special plates under articles 12, 13, and 14).

• Requires the Department of Motor Vehicles to change the color and design of license plates at least every eight years.

• Modifies section 28-2352 to allow vehicle owners to return expired license plates to the department and receive replacements upon payment of a $5 fee.

• Expands replacement plate eligibility to cover expired plates in addition to existing reasons (mutilated, illegible, lost, or destroyed plates).

• Maintains the $5 replacement fee for expired, lost, destroyed, or mutilated license plates and validating tabs.
