HB 2524 Summary

• Allows retired members of the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) to return to work and continue receiving retirement benefits if they have reached normal retirement age and waited at least 365 days after terminating employment.

• Prohibits employers from making retirement contributions on behalf of returning retirees and prevents retirees from accruing new credited service, benefits, or long-term disability program benefits during the return-to-work period.

• Requires retired members to acknowledge in writing their election to return to work within 30 days and file acknowledgement with their employer; this election is irrevocable for the duration of that employment.

• Limits compensation for returning retirees to the difference between the amount calculated by ASRS for their original retirement benefit and the monthly pension amount they actually receive.

• Exempts returning teacher retirees from specified teacher certification and employment requirements under Arizona Revised Statutes sections 15-536 through 15-543.
