HB 2557 Summary

• Beginning in school year 2015-2016, school districts and charter schools must provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training to all students in grades 7 and/or 8 using age-appropriate psychomotor skills instruction based on nationally recognized, evidence-based guidelines.

• If schools offer instruction that results in CPR certification, a certified CPR trainer must provide the instruction, though teachers facilitating non-certification training are not required to be certified trainers.

• Students may be excused from CPR instruction upon request of their parent or if they provide written documentation of prior CPR training or current CPR certification.

• Schools may accept in-kind donations of materials, equipment, or services from any person, public entity, or other legal entity to support the CPR instruction program.
