SB 1162 Summary

• Requires school districts and charter schools to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) instruction to students in grades 9-12 if sufficient resources are made available at no cost to the school.

• CPR training must be based on current national evidence-based emergency cardiovascular care guidelines and taught by a certified CPR trainer if the instruction results in CPR certification.

• Allows students to be excused from CPR instruction upon parent request, if the student has prior CPR training or certification, or if a school administrator determines the student is unable to complete the training.

• Permits schools to accept in-kind donations of materials, equipment, and services from any person or entity to support CPR instruction.

• Effective date is June 30, 2015.
