Department of Motor Vehicles may require replacement of standard license plates every seven years beginning January 1, 2018, except for special plates issued under specific statutes.

When the department requires license plate replacement under this provision, it must change the color and design of the new license plate.

Replacement requirement applies only to standard license plates; special plates issued pursuant to articles 12, 13, or 14 and certain other designated sections are exempt.

Owner may request either one or two license plates for vehicles with special plates, except certain special plates where only one plate is issued.
