HB 2502 Summary

• Establishes a joint select committee on corrections consisting of 3 senate members, 3 house members, the governor or designee, the corrections director or designee, and the administration director or designee.

• Committee chair elected by members at first meeting; quorum consists of 4 voting members (legislative members only); nonvoting members include governor, corrections director, and administration director.

• Committee shall meet at least twice yearly to receive testimony on prison bed construction schedules, inmate population trends, and conditions of confinement including inmate deaths, complaints, food services, and heating/cooling systems.

• Committee shall review and make recommendations on future prisons, capital investments for confinement conditions, private incarceration facilities, and other prison construction or operations matters.

• Committee must submit annual reports to governor and legislature by October 15 and terminates on July 1, 2025.
