John Upton Hays, former Arizona legislator, passed away on June 10, 2016 at age 88 after a lifetime of public service and ranching in rural Arizona.

Served in the Arizona House of Representatives from 1975 to 1982 representing District 1 and in the Arizona Senate from 1983 to 1990.

Held additional roles as Governor's Legislative Liaison, Director of the Department of Weights and Measures under Governor Fife Symington, and chairman of the State Parks Board beginning in 2000.

Advocated throughout his career for agricultural and private property rights, groundwater management, rural economic development, and wildlife and livestock protection.

Legislature expresses condolences to his surviving wife Mary, three children (John Jr., Jane, and Rebecca), and seven grandchildren.
