Notaries public who are not attorneys and advertise services in languages other than English (except single desk plaques) must post a conspicuous bilingual notice stating: "I am not an attorney and cannot give legal advice about immigration or any other legal matters."

Non-attorney notaries are prohibited from providing services for compensation that constitute unauthorized practice of immigration and nationality law as defined in statute.

Violation of the unauthorized practice provision results in a civil penalty of up to $1,000 and permanent revocation of the notary's commission.

Violation of the advertisement and notice requirements is classified as a class 6 felony and results in permanent revocation of the notary's commission.
