School districts and charter schools must conduct annual vision screenings for students in kindergarten and grades 1-5 and 9 using a Snellen chart or equivalent automated device at no cost to the school.

School superintendents and charter school principals must provide written notice to parents/guardians of students found to have possible vision defects or eye disease, including a brief description of the issue.

Schools must notify parents within ten days if their child did not receive a required vision screening, with an explanation of the reason.

Within ten days after conducting screenings, schools must report statistical data by grade level to the Department of Education showing the number of students screened and the number referred for follow-up examinations.

The Department of Education shall maintain a central database of vision screening statistical information reported by schools.
