SB 1384 Summary

• Requires the Department of Child Safety, in collaboration with the Department of Education, to identify or develop a statewide child sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention program by July 1, 2019.

• Program must include teacher training modules on prevention, identification, and response to child sexual abuse and assault, plus age-appropriate student materials for kindergarten through grade 12 covering recognition of abuse and strategies for disclosure and bystander intervention.

• Mandates each local education agency implement the statewide program by October 1, 2019, and establishes a uniform response policy and reporting procedure for incidents of child sexual abuse and assault.

• Allows parents or legal guardians to exempt their students from participation in the program entirely or from specific portions through written notification to the local education agency.

• Program terminates on July 1, 2028.
